Empowering Digital Health: My Journey as a Software Developer in a Tech Startup in Uganda

Daphine shares lessons from building mobile tools for frontline workers.

AdminTeam Stories

Six months ago, I joined MobiKlinic as a mobile developer with a mission to transform our app into a healthcare lifeline. What followed was an exhilarating journey that blended biometrics, conversational AI, and relentless collaboration to reimagine last-mile care.

Joining a young, passionate team determined to make healthcare accessible across Uganda.

Walking into the Kampala office for the first time, I met a team buzzing with purpose. We were young, curious, and united by a bold vision to improve healthcare accessibility in Uganda.

My brief was clear: evolve our mobile app into a dependable companion for community health workers (CHWs) serving underserved communities. I could not wait to get started.

Integrating Biometrics with Simprints

My first assignment was to embed biometric authentication so CHWs could avoid duplicate data entry. Partnering with SimprintsID, we integrated fingerprint enrollment directly into the CHP workflow.

Watching health workers test the feature and immediately see cleaner records was unforgettable. Biometrics gave them confidence that every household visit would be captured accurately.

Giving Life to Moby the Chatbot

Designing Moby, our in-app chatbot, to offer instant guidance during client visits.

Next, we shipped one of our proudest releases—Moby, a conversational assistant built to guide CHWs through triage and follow-up tasks in real time.

Moby is more than a chatbot; it is a trusted partner that points health workers to accurate information and actionable recommendations even when supervisors are miles away.

Continuing the CHP Evolution

From refining offline sync to reworking the design system, every sprint pushed us to build with empathy. Field visits and user testing grounded our decisions in real-life challenges.

I have since transitioned into a digital products management role, stewarding the roadmap that keeps our tools responsive to community needs.

Women Leading in Health Tech

Celebrating the women powering MobiKlinic's digital innovation.

As a female developer, I am proud to help break barriers and inspire more women to join the health tech space.

This is only the beginning—each release reminds me that technology can carry compassion, efficiency, and dignity into every community we serve.
